Performance space of "Estany" is a museum of new generation equipment with a current museological discourse, focusing on the constant interplay between the museum and territory and with a clear component naturalist.
Francesc d’Assís Darder i Llimona was born in Barcelona and, following family tradition, became a vet; but his interest in natural history meant he dedicated himself to preserving animals (taxidermy).
He was the founder and first director of the Barcelona Zoo, also being an important researcher in the field of taxidermy and breeding domestic animals.
He came to Banyoles in 1910 attracted by the fishing opportunities at the lake, rather poor with regards to species diversity.
In collaboration with the Town Council, he started to repopulate the lake via a popular celebration known as the Festa del Peix (Fish Day), where different species of young fish were set free in the lake. A year later, the council named him Adopted Son of the town of Banyoles, in recognition of his work.
