The lake is the source and the main sign of identity of the town of Banyoles. Along with its lake basin are considered the most extensive karst whole of the Iberian Peninsula and a single area of great geological value, ecological, and cultural landscape.
The waters of the lake basin of Banyoles come from underground springs Alta Garrotxa infiltrating the limestone terrain.
Arriving in Banyoles, groundwater is found with a change of materials that go beyond being permeable waterproof and made to climb.
During the ascent, the water dissolves the limestone and gypsum placed on him and creates underground cavities that are increasing in volume until the roof gives way and the water emerges on the outside. This process leads to the emergence of gaps and, by extension, Lake Banyoles.
Picturesque landscape was declared in 1951 and sub-venue of the Olympic rowing in 1992.
